Grafting a Toe

Many have thought about making socks but been put off by the process of grafting a toe.  Really it couldn’t be more straight forward…

After you have completed the sock knitting and the toe has been decreased, all that’s left to do is close up the toe.

Cut the working yarn leaving about 12” attached to the sock.

Divide remaining stitches to be grafted evenly onto 2 needles.

Thread a darning needle with the 12” tail you left.

The needle closest to you will be the front needle, the needle behind that will be the back needle.

There is a rhythmic process to follow that requires CONCENTRATION, but it’s not difficult.  It is a 4 step process that must be repeated until all stitches have been worked.  You will use the darning needle as if it was a knitting needle as follows:

1. On FRONT NEEDLE insert darning needle AS IF TO KNIT into the first stitch, SLIP STITCH OFF.

2. On FRONT NEEDLE insert darning needle AS IF TO PURL into the next stitch, LEAVE STITCH ON.

3. On BACK NEEDLE insert darning needle AS IF TO PURL into the first stitch, SLIP STITCH OFF.

4. On BACK NEEDLE insert darning needle AS IF TO KNIT into the next stitch, LEAVE STITCH ON.
